A Chicago Wedding // Therese & Christopher

The odds were against good weather on Therese and Christopher's big day, it being at the beginning of January and all. Somehow, someway the clouds parted and the sun warmed the air to what must have been some type of record high of 58 degrees.

You could feel that they didn't want to let go of each other during our time together and we wish them all the luck and happiness in their future adventures.

Hanna + Justin // Chicago Engagement

Chicago Wedding - Mindi & Ben

Mindi & Ben's wedding was something I had been looking forward to for a long time. Not because they are a photogenic couple or because it was a fall wedding. Not because I got to shoot it with some of the best photographers and friends I know or because they had awesome cake; which they did.

I was excited because over the past year of planning and prepping grew a great friendship. I put everything I had into the process of creating imagery for their big day and in the end I can happily quote the cliche and cheesy saying that its not about finishing the book, but about the journey through it.

Congrats to Mindi & Ben. It is obvious you two are crazy for one another so get out there and have fun!

I woke up early this morning to catch a flight to Chicago. My good friends in The Hudson Branch just started recording their third album. After several tours, radio appearances, and awards won this is by far the most anticipated one to date.

The photo booth has got to be some of the most fun I've ever had at a wedding. I'm surprised we haven't had more injuries to be honest. Justttttt kidding!

Unlike the rented photo booths you sometimes find at weddings, the one we put together has space for several people, not to mention you can stand up to throw those flying side kicks you learned in karate when you were 12.

They are included in the mid to upper level wedding packages.

A Chicago Wedding // Cori + John

This has been one of the craziest months in a long time. I've been running around like a Mad Man (yup, I just made that reference) from airplane to picture spot. Bing bang bing bang. If I could google map my foot steps it would look like one of those weird jungles of string girls would make in elementary school.

I've had some real highs and real lows since the last post.

High.... attending a client's bachelor party. Some people may think that inappropriate when read, but I met so many great people and we tore the dance floor up so bad it was life changing. If you can make a life long friend while doing some biz at the same time...count one for the team.

Low.... while rolling up some white seamless after a photo booth session I got one of the WORST paper cuts of my life. "Where might one receive one of the worst paper cuts of their life?" you ask.... About as far underneath your finger nail as you could possibly slice a piece of thin paper. Yup...ouch. I can hardly type, write, or type on my iphone which sadly makes me useless. What's life without angry birds? I can't fling them the same with my pinky dangit.

High.... watching my buddies in The Hudson Branch tear it up in Chicago. I hadn't seen them live in a couple years and their music has grown and matured beyond belief. They go into the studio the first of October and will make magic, like always.

Low... I voluntarily asked for a trip because it had an overnight at home. Although it was nice to be in my own bed for one night, it was followed by the most brutal two day sequence any scheduler could think up. We're talking 3 am wake up calls (two in a row, east coast time folks), 5 legs a day and finishing at 5:30 pm. 14 hour duty days, just under 8 hours of flying in a day. Take out your book and see if you're legal type stuff.

High... The cat fell in the bathtub. I didn't see it happen, but it happened and thats great.

I had to finish on a high right?

This wedding was 13 hours of blood sweat and tears (on our part, we didn't see any blood or sweat from anyone else) but we had an AWESOME time and are excited to share the photographs!

Southern Illinois Wedding

Jacob and I packed up the car and drove the six hours to southern Illinois for a wedding that was too perfect.

The sun was hot but tucked away in the woods sat the alter and several benches for the guests. The weather was perfect and just after the first kiss there came a breeze that blew the leaves off the trees, cooled us from the summer sun, and indicated a storm was on its way.

It rained as we enjoyed fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, and about any choice of pie you could think of.

Just after everyone finished eating the rain let up and we enjoyed watching the kids play as everyone filed out to the hotel for the reception. Once there we had a few beers and set up the photo booth and the real party began.

Perfect.

The Wedding Album

The wedding album to me, is what it's all about. This is the finished product. It is usually the last item from the wedding the bride and groom get to open and because of that fact, we want it to be AWESOME. How cool is it that you can have all the photos from the best day of your life in one spot? Not only are they all presented in one spot, but they are modern, flush-mounted, clean, crisp, bound in leather and wrapped in cloth.

For those clients who are out of town, this post is for you. For those future clients who are still shopping around, this post is for you. For those clients who are awaiting the arrival of your wedding album, this post will make it more difficult!

The panoramic ability of these albums if by far my favorite. You will notice that the page crease is printable so the photograph's integrity is not at stake.

Although photographs help, they do not do these albums justice.

Impulse Trip : Utah

Erin and I took an impulse trip to Zion National Park in Utah. I've got to hand it to her, without my help she planned the entire three day trip with only a day's notice. She's an ambitious little firecracker ain't she?

We caught the first flight out of Chicago to Las Vegas and rented a car, drove through the mountains past Area 51 (oooh yeah!), and into the national park.

My favorite part of the hike was of course the awesome photo get away spots we found off the beaten path.

The beaten path wasn't all that bad though...

Erin was super excited about swimming in the river near the end of the trail. As cold as the water was, we were tired enough to give it a shot.

I couldn't resist snapping a few photos with my IPhone along the way...

All in all we had an awesome time.

We even found time to stop by the pawn shop in History Channel's Pawn Stars, lose some money on the Vegas strip, and even grab a bite to eat at the Sinatra restaurant at the Encore hotel. Too much class for me but dang that Sinatra could wear the heck out of a suit and top hat.

The Engagement of Lauren & Kevin

These two were up for anything, which meant they weren't going to end this shoot without jumping in the water with all their clothes on.

They were way too much fun to work with and I can't wait to shoot their wedding next year.

I'd love to look as good as they do while kissing underwater but unfortunately I'm pretty confident that my limbs would be flailing about.

Taylor & Christopher

A couple weeks ago Jacob and I flew to Charleston, South Carolina to shoot Taylor and Christopher's wedding. They are some of the nicest people around and downtown Charleston was unbelievable.

Taylor was really excited to get her father's reaction when he first saw her in the dress. She had him facing the opposite direction as she walked down the aisle and met him at the end.

I'm a huge fan of anything that makes a man a gentlemen. Such things include tassel shoes, a good fitting suite, Georgio Armani cologne, and a good straight razor shave. You can imagine how psyched I was when I heard Christopher was taking his groomsmen, father, and uncles to a local barbershop for hair cuts and a straight razor shave.

Christopher bought all of his groomsmen pocket watches. I've never wanted to be a part of the wedding party so bad.

Normally the first and second shooter split up and I only have the chance to either shoot the bride or groom getting ready. Both Jacob and I had the chance to shoot both groups this time, so once we were finished at the barber shop we ran back to the hotel to photograph Taylor and her bridesmaids getting ready.

Christopher had warned us that he didn't think he'd make it through the ceremony without crying. I assured him I wouldn't miss it. Sure enough...

I took this photo back in 2008.

I don't remember what we were doing before we decided to go take photos downtown. I don't remember what we even did downtown. I don't remember what we did after that.

There are a lot of things I don't remember about that day. Details become fuzzy and certain events slowly spill into others.

What I do remember about that day is Shannon running and jumping around, spinning circles for the camera and laughing uncontrollably. These were not forced actions. I didn't ask her to do any of this for the photo so it could seem natural. This is just who she was. Anyone who knew her knows this is the honest truth.

Shannon taught me to be completely in love with life. She taught me to not care what people thought, to not live life scheduled and planned, to do what you love and love what you do, and most importantly to love the people around you.

Three years ago I received a call from my good friend Matt that changed my life forever.

Although Shannon isn't here anymore, she continues to bring all of us closer together. She continues to remind me to be patient, to love everyone, to not take life so seriously, to sing way too loud in the car, and to do what I want to do in life, even if that seems impossible.

I will never forget how she lived her life, and I will continue to try to live mine like hers.

Sint Maartins, Netherlands

I feel as if I have been working non-stop since May. Our trip to Sint Maartins couldn't have come at a better time, and we couldn't have had better weather.

Usually I'm waking up at 3 or 4 a.m. Chicago time and working 10-12 hour days with not much time off. Sleeping in everyday, relaxing with a dollar beer and a few cookies, and eating Mahi Mahi everyday was more than I could have asked for.

Maho Beach is one of the most famous in the world. We knew we wanted to go somewhere in the Caribbean, and it didn't take much convincing on my part to head to a beach where airplanes approach approximately 20 feet above your head. You could hear the wing tip vortices of the 747 rip across the ocean as it approached and feel the mass of its body as it rushed passed you seemingly inches from your fingertips.

I acquired quiet the sun burn on this day, as pulling myself away from this entertainment served to be difficult.

I had to give a cuban cigar a shot and I must say, it wasn't bad at all. I don't possess enough knowledge about cigars to really tell a difference, but the guy at the store was advertising it was cuban, so therefore I felt pretty neat trying it.

Rise Against: Endgame

Back in November I got a call from Interscope/Geffen Records to shoot Rise Against for their upcoming studio album to be released in March of this year. Having worked with Rise Against several times in the past and being a fan of not only the guys but the music itself, I happily accepted.

They were still recording the album in Ft. Collins Colorado, so a month later Jacob and I were on a plane to Colorado. The first day we spent over 8 hours location scouting with the creative director and just around 8 to 10 hours shooting in an abandoned farm the next day. With winds consistent at 40 mph we used a lot of sandbags and managed to break only one strobe.

A few weeks after the shoot I got another call from Interscope asking me to shoot the Album cover and interior. The concept was discussed and I spent the next day outside in the cold with 10 year old Mason and his mother.

Here are some photos of the end product, as well as a video I found of someone un-boxing it.

The week following its release was exciting, as those photos (especially the cover shot) were popping up everywhere. I grabbed a few for kicks.

Stop to Smell the Roses

There was nothing more magnificent, nothing that made life feel "larger" than the thought of an airline when I was little. The fact that people had the ability to connect other people to the world was incredible. And not only were we able to get people from A to B, but it was a majestic way of doing so. It was high end and classy. Not only was it traveling, but it was traveling by air, and that sounded good.

Something tugged at me watching my Dad walk in the front door in that uniform that was pressed so well that it looked even better than when he left for the trip. His kit bag smelled of worn leather and weighed more than I, which boggled my mind because its contents held only thin sheets of paper that were so fragile to the touch you had to turn slowly as not to rip them. His shoes were black as the sky he had just navigated through, even possibly believing that they may be a mirror, trying to reflect my face as I inspected them for any kind of scuff that was an impossibility to find.

My obsession with the glory days of flight quickly grew as I did and I knew I was hooked. The sunrise quickly sparking the side of that metal airframe for a second as it turned on the taxiway and the vibration of your ribs as an MD-80 tore the air mass apart over your head. Somehow we humans, as small as we may be comparably to many things in this world, were capable of engineering and building something that actually roared to life; that shook your teeth as it passed and seemed to be alive with a force that kept us at bay while it lifted its gigantic self into the air.

I was a boy in awe. That is what it's about. That is what makes life feel big.

Unfortunately the days are short and the workload is high. It becomes hard to take a few seconds and remember why you are there. It becomes hard to remember where you came from, what caused that initial spark in you to do this in the first place.

I admit I am guilty of the occasional complaint about my schedule, about being forced to work on a day off, and about a short 8 hour overnight after being delayed all day. Luckily my family, friends, and girlfriend are patient with me. Many times they are much smarter than I, reminding me this is what I love to do. And thank God for them because I am madly in love with this job, even if the schedule forces me to forget that from time to time.

But for everyone out there whose days feel short and schedules are packed to the max, remember that we aren't here for long and while we are, to really enjoy every second we have.

Ernest K. Gann said it well in Fate is the Hunter...

"Such businesslike thinking is not too easily assimilated by some of us who have been more inclined to regard an airplane as a basically joyous instrument. When skillfully rolled, slipped, spun, and dived, a plane could provide endless delight if not a bountiful income.

For us there was still enough glamour left in flying to relegate all monetary considerations far to the background. We did not begin to fly because we might make more money with an airplane than we might have if otherwise employed.

Iphone Applications I Can Not Live Without

I got my first cell phone eight years ago. I think it was a Nokia, bulky and dull in all its glory. The screen had no color, except florescent blue when the light turned on. Still, this had come a long way from the phone with a 20 ft chord attached to it that I would tangle myself in as my mom talked and cooked at the same time when I was small. It kept me connected to the world (which at the time was a few friends, a surprising number considering my fashion sense and hair gel combo).

I like to remember that phone every so often as a feeble attempt to keep my feet attached to the ground as the technology of 2011 continues to far surpass what I ever thought we were capable of. I have not experienced the new phenomena they call the iphone 4, but I got the iphone 3GS a little over a year ago, and this thing is nothing short of incredible. It amazes me that people out there complain about dropped calls and slow service, when such a short time ago we weren't able to get a hold of each other if we left the house, and the phone within it attached to the wall.

So, this post is all about sharing my favorite applications the iphone has to offer. Keep in mind that these applications pertain to my particular taste and therefore may not interest you. However, I do hope it allows at least some of you to realize the amazing age we live in, and to remember what we used to put up with.

LogTen Pro

($60)

If you asked a pilot what three things he would grab out of his house in a fire, they would be his family, his logbook, and his dog. Probably in that order, depending on whether or not he had one of those tiny little yappers that never seem to know what "shush" means.

Either way, this is probably one of the more powerful (and expensive) apps out there. Paper logbooks have always been the norm, and you're probably not thinking with your whole brain if you still don't keep an actual pen/paper logbook, but electronic logbooks are a great backup that provide even more information.

Paper logbooks look something like this...

Every time I come home from a trip, I spend a good 30 minutes filling this out with flight numbers, dates, aircraft types, flight times, and a lot of other information.

What's great about the electronic logbook (computer logbook) is that it allows you to enter even more details than you would on a paper logbook and even allows you to sub-categorize by aircraft type, category, or number. Pilots that fly for an airline are only allowed to fly a certain amount of time in a day, a week, a month, and a year. Both their pilot and medical certificates expire every few years and all of this can be tracked automatically with LogTen Pro.

The problem arises when I have to fill out both a paper logbook AND an electronic logbook when I get home.

The solution.... LogTen Pro.

After every leg we fly at work I can take out my iphone and enter all this information in a super easy and fast format. It automatically saves and when I get home, all I have to do is open the app, push the "sync" button, and wait for about 8 seconds while this guy transfers all of my flight data from my phone, into space, and back to my computer.

Why have two logbooks? On top of the great features LogTen Pro offers that I briefly explained above....BACKUP.

We use these for legality purposes, check rides, and most importantly interviews. This allows me to have both a paper copy and an electronic copy that I can backup on a hard drive and even save to the web where it can't get lost or spilled on.

- It has a "Totals" section, which shows total time in certain conditions such as night flying, cross country flying (greater than 50 miles legs) and instrument time (time flying in clouds).

- The "Limits" section automatically tracks how many hours you have flown in a day, a week, a month, and a year. When you start getting close to your limit, the number will turn orange and even red if you progress further.

- Although I don't use it much, it also has the capability to track your rest times, which is something we need to make sure we have enough of.

- On top of that, you can enter all of your medical and pilot certificate information and it will automatically track the expiration date and notify you when they are about to lapse.

You can see that my flight instructor's certificate is set to expire at the end of March
My medical certificate is only good until May.

Whether you fly for fun or for business, this application is a must. It costs a $60 one time fee.

ForeFlight

($75/year)

If you're not a pilot, keep reading! I promise the next one won't involve aviation.

ForeFlight is also one of the more powerful apps I have found out there. It has the ability to do every sort of flight planning we've worked hard to learn as pilots in about 1/10th of the time.

- You have the ability to pull up live moving radar of the region you're flying through, as well as many surface analysis charts that allow the pilot to gain knowledge of the overall conditions on their route. If we had actually planned a flight, it would even draw the route on the radar so you have an idea of how close to the weather you may be.

- Freezing level charts and NOTAMS are available as well.

Freezing level charts allow the pilot to determine whether the clouds may contain ice in them that could adhere to the aircraft surface. Some aircraft have no means to rid of the ice, and therefore it could be a danger for them to enter those conditions
NOTAMS are notices to airmen and provide the pilot with information on closures, updates, and advisories at certain airports along their route.

- Weather reports and forecasts are available at certain airpots along with the winds aloft.

Winds aloft allow the pilot to determine what the winds are doing at certain altitudes. This could affect how long the flight will take, and how much fuel the aircraft burns while en-route.

- On top of receiving weather reports like AIRMETs that tell of potential turbulence, icing, or cloudy conditions, Foreflight also allows you to even file the flight plan with Flight Service. This used to only be done over the telephone, and now you can do it while driving to the airport without talking to anyone (assuming you're not doing the driving of course).

For what Foreflight is capable of, the price isn't bad. It will run you $74.99 a year.

ABC News

(Free!)

- I promised a non-aviation related app, and its even free! There's still something about an actual newspaper that makes morning complete, but this guy is pretty handy when you're packed in like sardines on the employee bus or just don't have access to a paper. I'm not sure how people function without first knowing whether or not Obama dyes his hair...

- It also has video newscasts and morning shows like "Good Morning America" and "Today".

- "Alerts" are handy and can be set to pop up on the home screen of your phone without the application even being used. Alerts are used when major emergencies occur in certain areas.

There's no excuse to own this baby, as it won't cost you a dime!

Fandango

(Free!)

Another free-be!

My girlfriend and I never decide to see a movie while sitting at home. We are either running errands, getting coffee, or traveling from A to B. Its nice to be able to look up show times, nearest theaters, directions to the theater, and even watch movie previews right away.

Chase Online Banking

(Free!)

- Online banking has got to be one of the greatest inventions and the fact that its in the palm of your hand is incredible.

This app allows you to view all of your accounts and there individual current balance. If you'd like to pay a bill directly from one account, pressing "Pay Bills" will guide you through doing just that.

- You can easily see all of your account activity and even transfer money from one account to the other. The only checks I write these days is to my landlord, and that's because they would think I was crazy if I payed them any other way then just walking downstairs and handing them a check.

Airline Pilot Central Forums

(Free!)

- This is a relatively new app. The website has been alive for awhile and provides pilots with information on EVERYTHING. If you want to know the best crash pad in New York, you go here. If you want to know how many people the last class just had, you go here. If you want to hear all the latest, juiciest rumors that don't have the slightest chance of being accurate, you come here.

Now you can do it while your away from home.

How our parents went to college without dictionary.com is beyond me. I guess they had to pick up an actual book.

If you like playing your significant other in scrabble (and winning) I highly suggest this app. Secret's safe with me.

- Just like I will never beat my Grandpa at checkers, I will never beat my Mom at Scrabble.

- Now we can play each other when she's on lunch break in Chicago and I'm delayed for an hour in Miami.

StumbleUpon

- Another great one if you're stuck somewhere with nothing to do is StumbleUpon.

- When signing up for this website you simply enter you're interests, click "Stumble" and the computer finds websites that you would most likely find interesting.

- This is the first website that popped up when I hit "Stumble" and the photos are awesome, so I'm going to give it a thumbs up so it knows I like websites like that.

- If the next one is an inside edition of sports illustrated swimsuit edition, I'm going to give that a big thumbs down because I'm a good boyfriend.....most likely.

Pandora

- This is one of my favorite apps that I use most often.

- Pandora allows you to build a customized radio station by telling it your favorite artists.

- Example: We're listening to the "Early Jazz Radio" and listening to some Dean Martin. When Dean is finished, a similar artist (maybe Sinatra, Armstrong, or Cole) will start to play.

- Shaving in the morning cannot be fully enjoyed without listening to Dean Martin at the same time.

Radar Scope

- Radar scope is a must have, not only for pilots.

- You can choose which radar you take information from and even its reflectivity tilt.

Pano

($1.99)

- If you're a follower of my 365 via iphone blog, you've seen many panoramic shots.

- This guy is a little tricky to use and takes some getting used to...

- but for a phone, it does the trick.

NHL GAMECENTER

(Free!)

- This is a good one if you want to see how much the Jackets lost by last night.

- It also gives you on ice play by plays, standings, news, and a lot of other cool information.

Netflix

(App is Free! Service is $9.99/month)

- I'm not sure why it took me so long to get to Netflix, as this is one of my favorite apps of all.

- You can stream movies and television shows ANYWHERE you are. Emphasis on the ANYWHERE.

- Streaming off the 3G allows you to watch without being connected to a network.

- This means while your sitting in the airport waiting for your delayed flight for three hours, you can be watching episode after episode of The Office or Parks and Recreation while everyone else is complaining that they just payed $10 to connect to the airport's available wifi network.

LiveNation

(Free!)

- If you travel a lot and you like music, LiveNation is a must.

- Say I have an 18 hour layover in Miami and nothing to do. I can look up venues closest to where I'm at and all the happenings that are taking place within them.

GoogleEarth

(Free!)

- Not only is GoogleEarth visually appealing, its totally awesome if you're in a foreign city and need to know where the nearest restaurant or hotel is. Also good for finding out what type of neighborhood your new crash pad is in, which turned out to be a not so great one.

- If you're an airplane dork like yours truly, then you'll love LiveATC

- You can choose from control towers around the world and listen in.

- They provide airport diagrams and moving radar if you really want to know the nitty gritty.

- If I've got nothing to do and I know my Dad is about to start a trip, I'll listen in and see if I can hear a familiar voice on the way to Tokyo.

Model Release

- This app allows the photographer in a bind a convenient way out.

- Good photographs can be spontaneous a lot of the time. If you know you'd like to use that photograph for something later on and would like to have that individuals John Hancock just in case, this is the app you need.

Restaurant Finder

(Free!)

- This app doesn't need much explaining.

- Search for the type of food you like and it displays all of the restaurants in a map. Choose which one you like and it will provide an address, phone number, and even open the GPS on your phone and guide you there!

Angry Birds

- nuff said.

I come from a family that has a hard time waiting until Christmas day to open presents. My dad, still to this day tries everything in his power to come up with a legitimate excuse as to why someone in the family can't open something a bit early.

Anyways, maybe I have inherited that gene, but I'm having too much fun taking these photos that I figured I'd announce the "twist" that will be the largest part of the 2011 photo-a-day.

Starting January 1st I will take a photo with an iphone everyday for a year. The photos will be both taken and edited in the iphone and posted each day.

Hopefully this will allow people to realize how neat some of the technology is that's available today or it will make them realize that taking photos with a phone is a very very bad idea.

I guess the pressure's on!

Training is going really well. I've never studied this hard for anything in my life, and I still feel like I have too much to learn and both my written and oral exams are in a week.

The coolest part so far, as nerdy as it may be, is getting the wings. I always thought my Dad's wings were the coolest thing when I was growing up, so pinning a pair of my own on feels pretty good. However, I still have 4 exams to pass before I can wear those babies, so I don't see any light at the end of the tunnel just yet.

I miss shooting weddings with Corey and Jake. I miss my car, my apartment, my family, good meals, and I miss my girlfriend a lot. I think it'll be worth it as long as I pass these tests.

Well at least this is what Jake and Corey do. It's a bit more entertaining then what I do, unless you like watching someone flip a bunch of switches and check the fuel/oil 6 times a day.

I drove up to watch The Hudson Branch play a few weeks ago at The Metro in Chicago. Its fun to watch them progress over the years and even better when you get home and find multiple videos of their performance online.

I don't have much time to go on the internet. Life has been the craziest its ever been, but I couldn't ask for anything better right now.

Work has been awesome lately, and my free time has been spent flying the twin through bad weather.

Erin and I spent valentine's day eating at Panda Express which doesn't sound that great, but to us its the best meal there is. Just FYI, there fried shrimp are awful.

I haven't had much time to take photos, but I'm sure it will pick up once the weather gets better. In the meantime, I've been having a lot of fun taking photos with my Iphone.

After flying all day Saturday I headed up to Chicago for The Hudson Branch show. Once again, I think they changed everybody's lives in that room for the 45 minutes that they played. They were unbelievable.

The day after that I flew out to Dallas to interview with American Eagle Airlines. It was a dream come true even walking through their headquarters. I received an offer letter and made it to the second day which was medical, and headed home after that.

Sorry about the lack of updates lately.

The week of Thanksgiving was a good one. We ate lots of food, watched movies, slept in, went to the bars, roamed around in the city, and even attended the theater.

I have taken on the time demanding task of logging all of my flight time (from day one, one entry at a time) on a computer program to back up my paper logbook. After a couple hours of hair pulling and teeth grinding trying to figure the program and all its quirks out, I have come to appreciate the power of a digital logbook and will soon have the joy of seeing the printed copy.

I thought I was going to finish much sooner until I hit the year 2008 and as you can see by the graph, the entries multiplied two-fold.

I started the day by waking up after 7 a.m, which almost never happens. We headed to Dunkin Donuts and got breakfast sandwiches with coffee.

When I was around 10 or 12 we bought a remote control airplane and tried to fly it. I think I remember it working, but I also remember flying it into a tree and ruining it on the first day.

My dad has gotten back into the hobby lately so we went to the park to watch them fly. These things are way too much fun.

For those of you who I haven't told, I was recently hired by the University of Illinois Institute of Aviation as a full time flight instructor. It may not sound exciting to most, but its something I've worked really hard for, for several years. This means lots of flying and less picture taking. This is actually okay with me, as I am able to take only the jobs I REALLY want and am more passionate about.

Most of those who are close to me have heard the story (probably more than once) of how I've wanted to fly since I ever knew what an airplane was. My Dad is a captain for American Airlines so I grew up loving everything about aviation. If I wasn't pretending I was a co-pilot in my Mom's Saab turning the air conditioning buttons or drawing instrument gauges on the cardboard box that our refrigerator came in, I was probably making my GI JOE's take flight in a toy airplane or driving with my dad singing to "Tree Top Flyer".

Anyways, my parents and my family are the main reason I'm able to do a lot of things today. Whether it was financial help, or my Dad secretly googling the answers to my questions over the phone because he didn't want to admit he wasn't exactly sure what the answer was (love ya dad!), they were a huge help no matter what.

So when I received an e-mail from my pops this evening, warning me about the hazards of fall/winter flying and icing conditions, I realized I never really gave them and everyone else the proper thank you.

This is a thank you, although I'm not sure about the quality of it. Either way, whether it was money, googling my questions, listening to me talk in conjunctions and pretending to be interested (mom!), getting mad at me for not watching my airspeed properly, or making me hit my landing point over and over until I got it right, I am grateful.

To sign off a long and probably dry post, here are some wise words from my Dad himself.

A little icing won't cause the airplane to fall out of the sky, BUT as you know it will quickly change the shape of the wing and increase the stall speed dramatically.

Just remember what your 'ol dad has told you all of these years -

"Speed is life - the only time you're going to fast is when you're getting ready to hit something"
